Shackled

And God spoke all these words saying, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  You shall have no other gods before Me.  You shall not make for yourself a carved image–any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD, your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me”  (Exodus 20: 1-5).

There is no curse without a cause. Those that proceed from God are (1) due to our rebellion or ungodliness and (2) our failure to hear God’s voice and do what He says (disobedience).  Two specific forms of disobedience that will surely provoke God’s curse is the breaking of the first two commandments (Exodus 20: 1-5).  The two sins God specifies here are acknowledging any other god before or besides the Lord.  It is not enough to say God is first or greatest before any other gods.  You must acknowledge that HE IS THE ONLY TRUE GOD!  There is NO other besides Him (Isaiah 45: 21).  The second cause is when we make an artificial representation of God and then offer worship to it.

In Romans 1: 20-23 Paul tells us what is involved in breaking these two commandments.  One, God’s invisible qualities ( Divine power and nature) have been clearly seen, so men are without excuse and two, we know God , yet we do not glorify Him as God, nor do we give Him thanks.  Our thinking has become futile and our hearts have become darkened.  We have exchanged the GLORY OF IMMORTAL GOD for images made to look like mortal man, birds, animals, and reptiles. Those who acknowledge false gods and practice idol worhip are becoming progressively debased.

God’s judgemnt on the breaking of these first two commandments bears the mark of the curse and it will continue from generation to generation.  In some nations and cultures, the practice of worshipping false gods goes back over hundreds of years, compounding the effect many times over.  A person who comes from such a background is heir to a curse that can be compared to having a weed planted in his life, liinking him to satanic forces outside himself.

This weed has two roots:  One tap root that goes straight downward, and other less powerful lateral roots taht stretch out in various directions.  The tap root represents influences from previous generations who worshiped false gods.  Lateral roots represent influences the person has been exposed to in his own lifetime, through sin he has committed or through his own attachment to false gods.

Before you can truly enjoy liberty (freedom) and the FULLNESS of NEW CREATION IN CHRIST JESUS, the weed must be completely pulled out with all its roots.  The most important root to remove will be the tap root and nothing but the supernatural grace and power of God can effectively move the tap root and the others.  BUT, praise God, there is HOPE in the promise of Jesus in Matthew 15: 13; “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.”
